How to Back Up And Restore FTP Voyager  -  KB Article #1189

Related Articles -- 2104

This article contains instructions to perform a complete back up of FTP Voyager's configuration, and optionally, to restore that configuration on another machine.

Backing Up FTP Voyager

These instructions back up your site profiles, settings, scheduled tasks, scheduler settings, scheduler site profiles, and custom commands. An optional step also backs up your window positions and state.

  1. Create a backup folder to hold your FTP Voyager backup files.
  2. Create "scheduler" and a "gui" subfolders in the backup folder.
  3. Locate the "installation" folder where FTP Voyager keeps its settings. Unless you changed this during installation, you will typically find this folder in one of the following locations:
    • Windows XP or Server 2003: "C:\Program Files\FTP Voyager"
    • Windows Vista, 7, 8 or Server 2008 or 2012: "C:\ProgramData\RhinoSoft\FTP Voyager" or "C:\ProgramData\RhinoSoft.com\FTP Voyager"
  4. Copy the following files from the "installation folder" into the "scheduler" subfolder of your backup folder.
    • FTPVoyager.Archive
    • FTPVoyagerSettings.Archive
    • Scheduler.Archive
    • FTPVoyagerID.txt
  5. Locate the "user profile" folder where Windows keeps FTP Voyager settings. You will typically find this folder in one of the following locations:
    • Windows XP or Server 2003: "C:\Program Files\FTP Voyager"
    • Windows Vista, 7, 8 or Server 2008 or 2012: "C:\Users\jonathan.lampe\AppData\Roaming\RhinoSoft.com\FTP Voyager"
  6. Copy the following files from the "user profile folder" into the "gui" subfolder of your backup folder.
    • FTPVoyager.Archive
    • FTPVoyagerSettings.Archive
    • CustomCommands.Archive
  7. If you also want to preserve your FTP Voyager window positions and other display information (most people do not preserve this information), use RegEdit to export your "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Rhino Software\FTP Voyager" registry key as "FTPVoyagerWindowStates.reg" into your backup folder.

The highest quality and most accurate backups are ensured when FTP Voyager is closed and the FTP Voyager Scheduler service is stopped, but backing up these files and registry settings while the programs are still active is supported. (In fact, this may be your only option if you run FTP Voyager Scheduler 24/7.)

Backup Utility

This RhinoSoft utility will back up all these settings to a single Zip file.

Restoring FTP Voyager

  1. Install or upgrade to the latest edition of FTP Voyager.
  2. Shut down FTP Voyager and the FTP Voyager Scheduler service.
  3. Find your "installation" and "user profile" folders. (See list of typical locations above.) Note that the installation folder may be different on different machines.
  4. Copy all your "*.archive" files and "FTPVoyagerID.txt" from the backup "scheduler" folder into your installation folder.
  5. Copy all your "*.archive" files from the backup "gui" folder into your user profile folder.
  6. If you decided to also back up your window states, use RegEdit to import the "FTPVoyagerWindowStates.reg" file you created earlier. (This step is optional.)
  7. Start FTP Voyager and the FTP Voyager Scheduler service.

Exporting and Importing Site Profiles

Instead of performing a full backup, you may just decide to export your FTP Voyager or FTP Voyager Scheduler site profiles. (Each of the two sets of profiles are exportable/importable separately.) To export or import either set, open your Site Profile Manager or Scheduler Site Profile Manager window and use the "Import" and "Export" buttons at the top of the dialog.

Import FTP client site profiles

Exported site profiles will be in CSV format, which allows you to remove, change or add new entries as necessary.

Older Versions (FTP Voyager 15.2.0.19 and Previous Versions)

Backing Up Site Profiles

  • Open Windows Explorer
  • Enable viewing of hidden files and folders by opening "Control Panel | Folder Options | View" and changing the "View Hidden Files & Folders" option "Show hidden files and folders"
  • Windows XP/Server 2003 users, navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\UserID\Application Data\RhinoSoft\FTP Voyager
  • Windows Vista/7/Server 2008 users, navigate to C:\Users\UserID\appdata\Roaming\RhinoSoft\FTP Voyager
  • Copy the FTPVoyager.ftp and FTPVoyager.qc files to a backup folder

Site Profiles can also be backed up using the Export utility of FTP Voyager under Tools | Export Site Profiles. This will export the profiles to a .CSV file, which can be reimported through the Tools | Import menu.

Tools | Import

  • Open Windows Explorer
  • Windows XP/Server 2003 users, navigate to C:\Program Files\RhinoSoft.com\FTP Voyager or C:\Program Files\RhinoSoft\FTP Voyager

  • Visit our Online Customer Service page to retrieve your registration ID on the new computer.
  • Apply your registration ID as outlined in your registration ID email message.
