Microsoft set the default behavior of Internet Explorer to use PASV mode when connecting to FTP sites in Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows 2003 Service Pack 1. If clients running Windows XP are unable to connect using Internet Explorer, please make sure PASV mode is enabled on Serv-U. Our article on configuring Serv-U for PASV mode can be found here.
Internet Explorer’s passive/active FTP behavior can be changed by following the directions below:
- Open Internet Explorer.
- Select Tools | Internet Options.
- Under the Advanced tab, find the option labeled “Use Passive FTP (for firewall and DSL modem compatibility)
- Check this box to use PASV mode or leave it unchecked to use active FTP
