Step 1 - Download and Install FTP Voyager

Download FTP Voyager to a temporary directory. After the download is complete run the fvsetup.exe file from the directory it was downloaded to. The FTP Voyager installation wizard steps you through the process of installation.

Step 2 - Create Your Web Site

Create your web site using a web creation tool. Or to create a temporary web site, start Notepad (Start | Programs | Accessories | Notepad) and copy the following text to the clipboard and paste into Notepad.

My First Website

Hello! Welcome to my website, I'm glad you're here.

2) Select "File | Save As" inside Notepad. Save the file as "index.html" to a location on your hard drive. Remember this location.

Step 3 - Connecting to Your Internet Account

Before putting a web site on the Internet you need to create an "FTP Site Profile" for your Internet account. Follow these steps to setup a profile for your account and to connect to your account.

  1. Purchase Internet access from a local Internet Service Provider. Your ISP will give you a user ID and password for FTP access to a computer connected to the Internet.
  2. Start FTP Voyager either from the Windows Desktop or from "Start | Programs | FTP Voyager".
  3. When FTP Voyager starts the "FTP Site Profile Manager" appears.
  4. Select the "Personal Sites" folder in the "FTP Site Profiles" list.
  5. Select the "New Site" button under the "FTP Site Profiles" list.
  6. Enter "My Website" under "Name".
  7. Enter your ISP's FTP computer under "FTP Site". This is normally in the form of "" or "".
  8. Remove the check mark for "Anonymous Login".
  9. Enter the "User ID" provided to you by your ISP.
  10. Enter the "Password" provided to you by your ISP.
  11. Check "Save Password" if you would like FTP Voyager to remember your password for you.
  12. Select the "Connect" button, FTP Voyager will begin connecting to your ISP with your login.
  13. In the local panes (middle), move to the location where you stored your web site (in Step 2 (Create Your Web Site) above).
  14. Using your right mouse button, click on the local folder where your web site is stored, then select "Set Local Folder". The next time you visit your web site using FTP Voyager, FTP Voyager will automatically go to this local folder.

Step 4 - Uploading Your Web Site

At this point, your web site is stored on your computer, and it is not accessible to people on the Internet. To allow others to view your web site you must "upload" it to a computer on the Internet. Most ISPs have a folder in your account called "www" or "public_html". This is where your web site needs to go. To upload your web page click on the "index.html" file in the local window and drag it and drop it on one of these folders. FTP Voyager will copy the file to your account.

Step 5 - Viewing Your Web Site

Different ISPs work different ways. For exact details on how to view your web site contact your ISP or read the instructions provided to you by your ISP for viewing your web site. Most ISPs allow you to view your web sites like this:

To view your web site, open your web browser and enter your web site location in the "Address" bar. Your web site should appear in your browser

Step 6 - Maintaining Your Web Site

Making changes to your web site is simple with FTP Voyager. The "Synchronize Folders" option is designed to upload changes only, saving you a great deal of time. To use "Synchronize Folders" use the following steps.

    1. Start FTP Voyager either from your Windows Desktop or from "Start | Programs | FTP Voyager".
    2. Select the site entered above. When the "FTP Site Profile Manager" appears, select the "Connect" button.
    3. Using your right mouse button, click on the remote folder where your web site is stored.
    4. Select "Synchronize Folders".
    5. The "Synchronize Folders" dialog appears. In the "Local Folder" value enter the location where your web site is stored on your computer. Press the "Browse" button to quickly locate this folder on your computer.
    6. Remove the check for "Overwrite Confirmations".
    7. To synchronize or mirror your web site on your ISP's computer select the "Synchronize" button in the "Remote Folder" "Comparison Results" area. An up arrow icon is shown under this button showing you that this operation affects your account on your ISP's computer.
    8. When complete, "Synchronized" appears in the "Remote Folder" comparison area.

Next time you use the "Synchronize Folders" feature, FTP Voyager will remember the folder you entered in step "5" above, and will remember all of your configuration options for this folder (i.e., check marks).
