Google Generating Extra FTP Traffic - KB Article #1795Related Articles --
Some users have reported seeing extra traffic generated by automated Google logins on anonymous FTP shares. In some rare cases, it seems that Google servers actually log on every few seconds, and provide no way to opt-out of this scanning. This can generate extra unnecessary or unwanted traffic and strain on your network.
There are only two ways to block these incidents. The first is to add an IP Access rule in the Server Details menu blocking access to "*.google.com" and "*.googlebot.com". These will block all access from Google hosts. The second is is to remove the Anonymous account entirely or give it a different name so Google cannot crawl the FTP share. To do this:
- Navigate to the Server Details | IP Access menu
- Click "Add"
- Add a "Deny Access" rule for "*.google.com"
- Add another "Deny Access" rule for "*.googlebot.com"
