RhinoSoft Product Lifecycle Policy (Serv-U, FTP Voyager and others)  -  KB Article #2082

Related Articles --

The RhinoSoft product life cycle policy defines whether each product version is supported and whether or not it is recommended for production use.

Each major version of a RhinoSoft product (e.g., "Serv-U version 12") can be in a different stage of the product life cycle than other major versions and other RhinoSoft products. New major versions are typically released about once a year, but the exact time between major releases can vary considerably. (Please consult each product's release notes for more information about historical release frequency.)

RhinoSoft provides product updates consisting of major versions, maintenance releases, service packs, patches and/or hot fixes to customers with a current, paid support/upgrade plan. Constant maintenance of a paid support/upgrade plan through support renewals is strongly recommended for all customers using RhinoSoft products in a commercial setting.

Beta

Beta versions of our products are available to invited and approved Beta testers. In the Beta stage RhinoSoft provides technical support for the product via email or other support channels designated in the Beta announcement mailed to all eligible Beta testers. Product defects (i.e., "bugs") not requiring architectural changes are usually fixed in the version they were discovered in if reported during the Beta phase. All support for Beta versions ends when the product version enters General Availability status.

General Availability (GA)

General Availability ("GA") versions of our products are available to new evaluators, new customers, and existing customers with current upgrade protection. GA products are recommended for production use. In the GA stage RhinoSoft provides guaranteed technical support with published response time to customers with a current, paid support/upgrade plan, and limited ("as time allows") technical support to other users of the software. Product defects (i.e., "bugs") not requiring architectural changes are usually fixed in the version they were discovered in if reported during the GA phase. The GA phase begins with the release of a new major product version and ends with the release of the next version, or an explicit retirement of the product.

Sunset

Sunset versions of our products are withdrawn from public availability, but are still allowed for production use. In the Sunset stage, RhinoSoft provides limited technical support: most issue investigation will require customers to update to a current version of the software before technical support may assist. Furthermore, product defects (i.e., "bugs") are not fixed in the version they were discovered in if reported during the Sunset phase. (Instead, they may be fixed in the current version of the product.) The Sunset phase begins with the release of a new major product version (the previous version is automatically "sunsetted") and ends with the release of the next version after that, or an explicit retirement of the product.

End of Life (EOL)

End of Life ("EOL") versions of our products are withdrawn from public availability and should not be used in production. In the EOL stage, RhinoSoft provides very limited technical support: almost all issue investigation will require customers to update to a current version of the software before technical support may assist. Product defects (i.e., "bugs") are not fixed in the version they were discovered in if reported during the EOL phase. (Instead, they may be fixed in the current version of the product.) The EOL phase begins with the release of a new major product version (the version released before the new Sunset version is automatically "EOL'ed"), an explicit retirement of a product version, or an explicit retirement of the product. The EOL phase is permanent.
