Backing Up And Restoring Serv-U

The intent of this newsletter is to give you some pointers on our products. This newsletter covers backing up Serv-U settings and user accounts, and also migrating Serv-U and user accounts to a new computer.

Backing Up Serv-U

It is very handy and a safe practice to back up Serv-U on a regular basis. You never know when a catastrophic event may occur: anything from a compromised computer, a hard drive failure, or even a clean installation of Windows will require a re-installation of Serv-U and restoring the previous Serv-U configuration and user accounts.

Backing up Serv-U is as simple as making copies of the configuration files and copying them to a safe location in case they need to be used to restore Serv-U at a future date. Serv-U 7 and newer store the configuration files differently than previous releases due to the redesigned architecture of Serv-U. For these releases, the critical configuration files to back up are the Serv-U.Archive file, Serv-UID.txt file, any file extension ending in .crt, .pem, or .key and the entire Users directory located by default in C:\Program Files\\Serv-U.

In Serv-U and newer, users running Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Server 2008 will find these files in C:\ProgramData\\Serv-U in accordance with updated requirements of the Windows operating system.

Configuration files for Serv-U version 6 and earlier are the ServUDeamon.ini and ServUAdmin.ini files, both located by default at C:\Program Files\\Serv-U.

Restoring or Migrating Serv-U to a New Computer

Restoring Serv-U or migrating it to a new server is a quick process. First, make sure that Serv-U is installed on the new server. Make sure that Serv-U is not currently running by right clicking on the Serv-U Tray and choosing "Stop Serv-U". You can then migrate the backed up configuration files described above to the correct directory. In Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 (or for Serv-U and previous) this is C:\Program Files\\Serv-U. In Windows 7, Windows Vista and Server 2008 (for Serv-U and newer) the location is C:\ProgramData\\Serv-U. Once the configuration files have been copied to the correct directory, you can now start up Serv-U to view your previous settings and confirm everything migrated properly.

To restore Serv-U 6 and earlier you will need to restore the files ServUDaemon.ini and ServUAdmin.ini. These files will always be restored to the Serv-U installation directory, which is by default C:\Program Files\\Serv-U.

Migrating Serv-U 6 and earlier configuration files to a version of Serv-U 7 and newer will require updating the configuration files to the newer file types first. To accomplish this, first back up your current Serv-U configuration files, then perform an in-place upgrade on the old installation by installing the latest version directly over your existing installation. The Serv-U installer will update the configuration files and after the upgrade is complete, then the updated configuration files may be migrated over to the newer installation.
