Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a network encryption protocol for transferring data. The SSL handshake between a server and a client uses a “key” or “certificate” to create a secure link (the SSL connection) that transfers encrypted data and files. SSL is an old and widely-known protocol but has been replaced with Transport Layer Security (TLS), a more secure option. Some programs still offer SSL compatibility, even if they also use TLS encryption. SSL meaning can also refer to SSL certificates, which can more properly be called SSL/TLS certificates. These are the certificates informing the client of the server’s identity and initiating a data transfer.
Essentially, an FTP SSL client allows a user to transfer files by using both the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and SSL encryption. FTP is a common method for transferring files of any size to or from a web server. While convenient, the FTP doesn’t offer robust security features—it typically requires just a username and password. FTP over SSL (FTPS) is a form of File Transfer Protocol (FTP) supporting the SSL and TLS encryption protocols. FTPS works in a client-server model, with both a control channel and a data channel, and the FTP SSL client verifies the server’s certificate before establishing a connection.
FTP over SSL (FTPS) is critical because FTP alone doesn’t offer sufficient security. FTPS requires a connection to be authenticated with a user ID and password, along with a public key certificate. The FTP SSL client verifies the trustworthiness of the server’s certificate, which helps protect against man-in-the-middle attacks. Without these security measures in place, bad actors could potentially access sensitive files, users could inadvertently download malware, or third parties could secretly view and alter the communications between client and server.
Serv-U supports best practice file transfer encryption and security protocols, including FTP SSL. Serv-U supports TLSv1.1 and TLSv1.2, although admins have the option of utilizing low-security SSL ciphers or disabling protocols to ensure backward compatibility. When utilizing FTP SSL, you can either use an existing certificate or create a new one. Serv-U supports 15 new cipher suites that help support successful and secure file transfer over FTP SSL.

The software supports various secure file transfer protocols, including FTP, FTPS, SFTP, and HTTP/S, and utilizes the FIPS 140-2 cryptographic standard. Serv-U supports two methods for encrypted data transfer: SSL and Secure Shell 2. Serv-U users can easily transfer multiple files and large files (over 3GB), while admins can manage users and groups to maintain file access control. It’s also possible to integrate the program with the Serv-U Gateway to protect data in transit in the demilitarized zone (DMZ).
